Thanksgiving History

Thanksgiving History feasts predate Plymouth. You'll even find a number of localities have vied to claim the first thanksgiving itself. Once for all are associated with the holiday of happy Pilgrims and we Indians sitting down to a big feast.

In 1614 when a troupe of English excavators sailed to England with a ship of Pawtuxet Indians bound for slavery. They were affected by smallpox that was left behind. That Pilgrims found only one Pawtuxet Indian after arriving in Massachusetts Bay.

Squanto survived slavery in England and knew their language.  He taught them to grow corn and fishing, and hammer out a peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Nation. At the end of their first year, the Pilgrims held a great feast honoring Squanto and the Wampanoag’s.

But as word spread in England about the paradise to be found in the new world, religious zealots called Puritans began arriving by the boatload. No fences around the land, they considered it as a public domain. Other British settlers captured the land, occupying strong young Natives for slaves and killing the remaining.

On the other hand, the Pequot Nation did not sign the peace Treaty which Squanto rejected and fought back. The Pequot War was the deadliest war ever fought in Indian history.

A day in Groton, Connecticut, in 1637 over 700 men, women, and children of the Pequot Tribe had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival which is today known as Thanksgiving Festival.

After a fortnight the sleeping Indians were surrounded by English and Dutchmen who ordered them to come outside and started shooting and the women and children were burnt alive in the longhouse. The very next day the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony declared "A Day of Thanksgiving" as unarmed men, women, and children were burned to death.

Cheers in the name of ‘Victory’, the brave colonists and their Indian allies attacked villages continuously. Women and children over 14 were dragged into slavery.  Approx 500 slaves on a daily basis left the ports of New England and rewards were paid for Indian scalps to encourage as many deaths as possible.

A raid followed against the Pequot which is now Stamford, Connecticut; the churches announced a second day to celebrate Thanksgiving for the victory over the heathen savages.

The chopped off heads of Natives were kicked through the streets like soccer balls.  Even Wampanoag got into this madness. Their chief was beheaded, impaled on a pole in Plymouth, Massachusetts where it remains to be on display for 24 years.

The murders became more ferocious. After every victory over a blunder massacre, the Thanksgiving feasts were held. Hence, George Washington finally suggested only one day of Thanksgiving to be celebrated annually. Afterward, Abraham commanded Thanksgiving Day as a legal national holiday during the Civil War and ordered troops to march against the starving Sioux in Minnesotan the same day.

This chronicle is not about the Indians and Pilgrims gathering down to have a massive feast. It is about learning and knowing about the true Thanksgiving History so that it won’t ever get repeated.
