Kali or Kalika or Shyama is one of the fierce and mysterious forms of Goddess Shakti. Her followers are known as Shakta, who worship Goddess Shakti or Goddess Kali. This Hindu Goddess is knowns as the destroyer of all evil forces.


She is one of the most worshipped goddesses according to the main categories of ‘Tantra’. Kali comes from the word ‘Kal’ mean ‘time’ so she is considered the goddess of time and death. Every year during Diwali West Bengal and a few other states worship Goddess Kali while North and South India worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. This occasion is known as Kali Puja.

Story of Goddess kali’s birth or origin:


According to mythology, Kali is the fierce form of goddess Shakti or Goddess Parvati who is popularly known as Goddess Durga wife of Devadidev Mahadev. There are several versions of the story regarding how Kali came into existence. 


According to one version, she took birth from the forehead of the enraged Warrior Goddess during a war against demons. As she emerged from anger her skin color was black. For this black skin, she was named Kali. from the time of birth, the only kali started to kill all the demons come to her way. She made a garland of their heads and wore it around her neck and wore a skirt of their hands. After finishing all the demons also her anger didn't come down all people and Gods became afraid. The Mahadev lied under her feet.


When she understood that she calms down.  In another version, it is said that when Goddess Parvati shed her dark skin it took the form of goddess Kali while Pravati was named as Gouri or the white one. 
There was one more version of the origin of Kali. There are 10 forms of divine mother Goddess Parvati who are known as dash Mahavidya. One of this Dasha Mahavidya is Kalratri. Some people believed that Kalratri and Kali are the same. 




History of Kali Puja:
The tradition of Kali Puja is not ancient. We came to know about Kali Puja's first time from ‘Kalika Mangan Kavya’ which was written in the late 17th century. Raja Krishnachandra of Nabadwip first time started Kali Puja in Bengal. It gets its popularity in the 19th century. Goddess Kali is worshipped in various temples. Nowadays, West Bengal, Orissa, and Assam celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and we can see Pandals and fairs during Kali Puja.  


Few famous kali Temples have special puja on the night of Kali puja. Such a few famous kali Pujas are Kali puja of Dakshineswar temple which is famous as Dakshineswar Kali puja, Kali puja of Kalighat, Kali puja of Tarapith and Kali Puja of Kamakshya. 


Outside West Bengal, there are many kali Mandir established by Bengali societies. These Temples also celebrate this festival. Not only Temples but where there are few Bengali people live they celebrate Bengali Kali Puja.

Kali puja or worship of Goddess Kali is always performed in Amabasya or No moon night of the Bengali month of Kartik. This year Kali puja is on Thursday, 12th November 2023; Sunday.
