Dussehra festival story:

There are 2 different stories about Dussehra.

  • The most famous story about Dussehra is Lord Rama's Victory over Asura King Ravana.

According to the Indian epic Ramayana Lord Rama went to the jungle for 14 years of exile to keep his father’s promise. His brother and wife accompanied him.

There one day asura King Ravana's sister Surpanakha saw Lord Rama and proposed for marriage. Lord Rama turned it down and Lakshmana cut her nose.

When Ravana saw his sister’s condition he was angry and he kidnapped Rama’s wife Sita. To rescue his wife Lord Rama attacked Lanka with the help of Monkey king Sugriva and his army of monkeys.

Before going to battle with Lord Ravana Lord Rama does worship of Mother Goddess or Maa Durga for her blessings this is celebrated as the festival Navratri. After getting the blessings of Maa Shakti he went for the battle. He fought with the demon king Ravana for 9 days and on the 10th day killed Ravana.

This day when Lord Ravana killed the Demon king Ravana is celebrated as Dussehra.

There is one more story behind Dussehra from another epic Mahabharata. When Pandavas were in exile before going to ‘Agyatabas’ or hiding they hid their weapons in a Shami tree for 1 year.

After one year when Kouravas attacked Matsya Pandavas worshiped the tree and collected their weapons from the Shami tree. They got victory over Kauravas. People believe that it happened on the day of Dussehra.
