Bhai dooj meaning/ Bhai Phota meaning:

‘Bhai’ or ‘Bhaiya’ means brother. And ‘Dooj’ means ‘Dwitiya’ the second day after ‘Amavasya’. And ‘Phota’ means ‘tilak’ or a sacred spot made in one’s forehead by Sandel paste with the help of finger for their wellbeing and happiness. Sisters celebrate this festival by praying for their loving brothers’ long happy and prosperous life.

Significance of Bhai dooj/ Bhai Phota:

It is a festival of brothers and sisters. On the day of Bhai Phota morning sisters take baths, get ready and in empty stomach prays for their beloved brothers' long and happy life. They believe that if on this day they give Phota or draw a Tilak on their brothers’ forehead then the God of Death Yama will grant him a long life.

Story of Bhai Phota/ Bhai Dooj:

There are few legends regarding the origin and background of the Bhai Phota or Bhai Dooj celebration. 1st and the most popular legend says that on this day the God of death Yama visited his sister the Yamuna. The Yamuna that day prayed for her brother Yama’s happiness and prosperity as a gratitude Yama thought that from that time which sister will pray for their brother’s life on that day he will grant that long life to the brother of that sister.

2nd legend says that day Lord Sri Krishna came back to Dwarka after killing Narkasur. His sister Subhadra who was worried about his well being welcome him by putting Tilak on his forehead fed him sweets and thanks to God for keeping her brother safe and sound. From that day the tradition of celebrating this day as Bhai Phota or Bhai Dooj started.

There is a 3rd and less popular legend also. It is said in folklore that Once Lord Vishnu was captured and kept in Prison by a brave and powerful king Bali. To rescue him Goddess Lakshmi visits Bali on this day and greets him as her brother. Bali accepts her as his sister and releases Lord Vishnu as then Lord Vishnu became his sister’s husband.

Nowadays all are busy and sometimes it's not possible for brothers and sisters to meet on the day of this wonderful festival. Generally, sisters give Phota in wall remembering their brothers if they cant give phonta to their brothers physically. But now the latest technology is a blessing for these brothers and sisters who can't meet on this day.

The practice of online Phota on Bhai Phota or online tikka on bhai dooj started in recent years via Video call. Sisters also can send Bhai Phota/ Bhai dooj wishes to their brothers to make the day special for the brother who stays away from her while a brother can send a beautiful gift to his sister to make her feel loved and to appreciate her love and care for him.

Bhai Phota/ Bhai Dooj Time:

Bhai Phota/ Bhai Dooj marks the end of a long array of nearly month-long festivals starting from Mahalaya or Navratri. Bhai phota/Bhai dooj begins after the end of Amavasya of Diwali or Kalipuja. The next day of Amavasya is called Pratipada and the 2nd day is named Dwitiya. Few people celebrate it on Pratipada and few celebrate it on Dwitiya. But celebrating the festival in Dwitiya is more popular that's why the other name of the festival is ‘Bharti Dwitiya’.
