Kojagori Lakshmi Puja rituals and culture -

Preparations for Lakshmi puja starts after Vijaya Dashami only. Bengalis clean their home and start preparing various kinds of dry deserts for prasad.

On the day of Puja people specially married women keep fast and place the idol of goddess in its place. Many families worship pictures of Goddess or Lakshmi Sara (painted Goddess Durga with goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati on an earthen pot.) instead of idols. Then they set up the Puja Ghat in front of Goddess.

They decorate the place of Puja with alpana (pattern drawing with a mix of rice and water) and footprints of Goddess Lakshmi. Many consider drawing of the footprint is essential to welcome Goddesses. They also place Dhaner Chhara in the hand of the Goddess and decorate the idol with flowers.

They observe fast for the whole day and generally at evening after puja they break their fast. People lit a pradip in front of goddess for the whole night to get blessings of Devi Lakshmi.

Next day after Visarjana in the mirror the idol is immersed in water.
