History of Penguin Awareness Day

In Alamogordo, California, Gerry Wallace wrote the event on his wife’s calendar when the National Penguin Say began in 1972. Later the celebration was brought onto the Naval Weapons Centre in Ridgecrest, where the Penguin Patrol news was made. 

25th April is the date that the Adelie penguins began their migration northward toward Antarctica.
There are over 1,500 national days in the calendar including the World Penguin Awareness Day!


It was a name in the first instance applied to a short-winged black and white diving sea bird called an Auk that is extinct now. Whatsoever the origin of this word “Penguin” is largely unknown. Some people say that it came from the Welsh word “Gwyn”, which means ‘white-head.’ This way, the History of Penguin Awareness Day came into action.
Penguin Awareness Day is an unauthenticated holiday that is celebrated annually on 20th January. This holiday is used to celebrate and to pay homage to these fascinating flightless birds which are loved globally. It’s also a day to bring attention to the predicament of these birds whose numbers seem to be shrinking faster and faster each and every day.  


Penguins are any of 18 species of crust walking oceanic birds that live only in the Southern Hemisphere. The majority live between latitudes 45° and 60° S. The Galapagos penguin lives at the Equator.


 The short-legged presentation of penguins has made people dear worldwide. They range from about 35 cm in height and 1 kg in weight. The emperor penguin is 45 inches in height and weighed 40 kg. Iris is red or yellow in color, orange on the head, neck, in the emperor and king penguins.


They are adapted for rapid locomotion in water, in which the wings, or flippers, are used for the motive force. When moving at high speed, they frequently leave the water in leaps back a meter.  Most of these smaller southern penguins feed upon seafood like squid, cuttlefish, etc. which obtain high densities in the rich, full oxygenated Antarctic fluid infractions. 

For the African penguin, fishes are the basic compound of the diet. The total weight of food consumed by a large penguin colony is grotesque, the maximum way in exceeding several tons each day.

The world over on 25th April, World Penguin Day 2023 recognizes one of the unique birds present on the Earth.  There are 17 species and their natural habitats recognized in the Southern hemisphere.

 The Emperor Penguin is the substance of the 18 penguin species and largest of all. There are estimated to be approx 595,000 adult Emperors today, and from birth, they spend their entire life around the Antarctic ice. Only these can do in temperatures nearing -50 degrees Celsius!

Emperor Penguins are the tallest about 4 feet tall. The smallest stands about 16 inches Penguins are excellent swimmers with the fastest penguin swimmer getting up to about 22 mph. Hence the world Penguin Day 2023 celebrates the uniqueness of the penguins.
