The first day of the Bengali calendar is known as Bengali New Year or Nababarsha or Poila Baisakh. Irrespective of religious faith people of West Bengal, Tripura, Pert of Assam and Bangladesh celebrate this day.
The festival is celebrated on the first day of the first Bengali month Baisakh. In Bengali, the meaning of ‘poila’ or ‘pohela’ means first. That's why this festival is called Poila Bisakh or Pohela Baisakh.
It generally falls on either the 14th or 15th of April. In other parts of India, this day is celebrated as the harvest festival. This harvest festival is known by various names in different parts of India as Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Central and North India, Ugadi in South India Vishu in Kerala and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, etc.
Pohela Boishakh history-
The history of Poila Baisakh traces from long back. There are two theories about the introduction of the Bengali calendar.
1st theory is that Mughal Emperor Akbar introduced the Bengali calendar for the benefit of tax collection. Before that tax was collected according to the Islamic Hijli calendar which was a lunar calendar and not falls with harvesting season. According to this theory, the Bengali calendar is a combination of solar and lunar calendars.
According to another theory, an ancient ruler of Bengal Shashanka introduced the Bengali calendar in the 594 Georgian calendars.
When the Bengali calendar was introduced from then the festival of Bengali new year started.
When is Bengali new year-
Bengali new year is celebrated as per the Bengali calendar. According to the Bengali calendar first Bengali month Baisakh falls in the month of April of Georgian Calender. Generally, Poila Baisakh falls either on the 14th or 15th of April.

Bengali new year is 594 years late than the Georgian calendar. In 2023 we will welcome Bengali new year 1430.
Poila Baisakh celebration-
Poila Baisakh or Pohela Baisakh is one of the big festivals for Bengalis all over the World. People of West Bengal, Tripura and Bangladesh celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm.
Before some days of the festival, people clean their house and shop for new clothes.
Bengalis generally celebrate this day with their family. People perform puja in the morning, seek blessings from their elders and wish each other ‘Subho Nababarsha.”
On this day people of the Bengali community wear new dresses and cook various famous Bengali cuisine to celebrate the festival.
In many places, people organize cultural functions to mark this occasion with songs, dance, drama, etc.
In Bangladesh, people organize Mangal Shovayatra. It was an initiative of students and teachers of the Fine Arts Department of Dhaka University.
In West Bengal people celebrate Haal Khata on the evening of Poila Baisakh. In many places, Baishakhi fare is also been organized.

There are few rituals connected to Poila Baisakh -
In the morning people worship God.
Seek blessings of elders
Wear new clothes.
Prepare Bengali delicious food.
Celebrate Haal Khata.
Hal Khata-
On the first day of Bengali new year, Bengali shopkeepers and traders open their new ledger. This is called as Haal Khata. On this day they closed their old ledger and open a new one with the blessings of God. they started the day with worship and invite their customers to settle old debts and start a fresh ones. To establish a good and healthy relationship with customers they offer give sweets, snacks, or gifts to their customers.
Pohela Boishakh food-
On this day people prepare various kinds of Bengali delicacies such as Polao, mochar ghanta, chhanar dalna, various kinds of fish, chicken, mutton, chanar payesh, payesh, misti, etc.
